- If site work has not started, permits may still be in the pre-application or review phase
- If grading or excavation is underway, the permit may be active and under inspection
- Expired or lapsed permits may require reapplication or updates to plans
Verified Through Local and State Environmental Agencies
Stormwater permits are issued and tracked by the local public works department or state environmental agency, depending on the size and impact of the project. Their records confirm application status, approval date, and conditions.
- For most sites disturbing 1 acre or more, an NPDES permit and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) are required
- Local agencies can verify whether plans have been submitted, approved, or conditionally accepted
- Permit documents also include maintenance responsibilities and inspection schedules
May Be Subject to Ongoing Compliance and Reporting
If a permit has been issued, the project may be in the compliance phase, where the site is monitored for erosion control, sediment runoff, and BMP (Best Management Practice) maintenance.
- Regular inspections may be required during and after construction
- Noncompliance can result in fines or stop-work orders
