Hello LandMark

What is the water/sewer capacity for future use?

 1. Water Supply Capacity and Future Planning

In Tamil Nadu, water supply capacities are managed by agencies like the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). For instance, Chennai receives approximately 985 million litres per day (MLD) from various sources, including the Krishna River and Veeranam Lake. However, the city’s demand is projected to rise to 2,100 MLD by 2031, indicating a significant future shortfall. To address this, projects like the Minjur desalination plant, which adds 100 MLD, have been implemented.

2. Sewerage Capacity and Expansion Plans

The sewerage infrastructure is also being expanded to meet future demands. For example, Chennai’s sewerage system, managed by CMWSSB, has undergone significant upgrades, including the construction of new sewage treatment plants (STPs) and the expansion of existing ones. The city’s sewerage network now covers 98% of its area, with treatment capacities totaling 769 MLD across multiple STPs. These expansions are designed to accommodate the growing urban population and increased wastewater generation.

3. Assessing Site-Specific Capacity for Development

To determine the water and sewer capacity for a specific site, it’s essential to consult local authorities:

  • For areas outside Chennai: Contact the TWAD Board to obtain details about existing water supply schemes and sewerage infrastructure relevant to your site.
  • For Chennai and its metropolitan region: Engage with CMWSSB to assess current capacities and any planned expansions that may affect your development.

These agencies can provide information on available capacities, connection feasibility, and any required infrastructure investments.
